Finding RETNA

Around town and finding RETNA of MSK on & off the streets of Los Angeles.

Los Angeles based street artist Retna, born Marquis Lewis of African-American, El Salvadorian and Cherokee descent, whose moniker was chosen from a Wu-Tang Clan song. Is best known for his hieroglyphic script based works, comprised of an original created alphabet that combines multiple influences from ancient Incan, Egyptian, Arabic, Hebrew, Asian calligraphy with graffiti elements. Starting out in the mid-nineties making murals on walls, trains and freeway overpasses throughout the city of Los Angeles. Retna gained acclaimed when Usher commissioned him to do a portrait of Marvin Gaye as well as a highly anticipated solo exhibit in 2010 at New Image Art in addition to his works that were featured at MoCA'a "Art in the Streets" last summer in 2011.

Here are selected shots of RETNA at various locations throughout the year on and off the streets.

Vans x Curtis Kulig "Love Me" Footwear Spring/Summer 2013

Vans Shoes has just recently announced that for it's Spring/Summer 2013 Line that they have teamed up with one of the most prolific street artists on their upcoming collaboration. Curtis Kulig aka "Love Me" has joined forces with Vans to brings us the Vans x Curtis Kulig "Love Me" Collection, slated for 2013. Curtis has been spreading his "Love Me" love since the late 90's. Which initially started out as youthful adolescent aggression and calls for attention. Since then, "Love Me" has put in work in every major city. In the form of stickers or slap tags, prints, wheatpastes, graffiti and the overall dominance of entire sides of bulidings, roof-tops and billboards with his simple message, that he really just wants you to love him and share in on some of his love & happiness.

Recently finishing up a Spring 2012 collaboration with Obey Clothing last Valentines Day. It is nice to see Curtis take his work to apparel and footwear. Forever solidifying his mark on Pop culture, street wear, skateboarding and street art. The "Vans x Love Me" Collection brings us three different styles of Vans. Slip-on, Authentic and Sk8-Hi are the models chosen for Curtis's classic and bold "Love Me" script. Keeping the colorways simple with just red, black & white, these shoes are sure to please the disconcerting art snob, hipster skater or street art enthusiast. Here is a sneak peak at what next year has to offer.
